Know Your Rights Resources
Dear friends,
Grannies Respond originally came together over the separation of children from families at our southern border. The subject and work of our groups and many others has changed focus over time due to border policies, such as the Remain in Mexico policy, and the pandemic, both of which impacted our work.
Regrettably, we are compelled to revisit our raison d'être with the threat of mass deportations, no matter if this will be a fast or slow process. The most necessary and effective help we can deliver to asylum-seekers is to educate them about their rights.
Do they know an I.C.E. warrant from a Judicial warrant? Do they have a plan if one parent is detained, or both, and children remain? What if their car is pulled over... are they obligated to answer questions? What questions are they obligated to answer?
These and many other issues need to be addressed and the correct knowledge imparted. The people who will execute this plan will probably not know all of the immigrant rights and, if the asylum-seekers do not know their rights either, many injustices are bound to ensue.
Can you mobilize to create Know Your Rights events in your area? Schools, libraries, houses of worship, all may be places to hold such events. If you can, please email me at catherine@grannies respond.org or call or text me at 845-489-5688 so we can arrange to have a brief call. It is an important endeavour and I hope you can assist! I would like to have a conversation with you if you think you can work on this and I can offer some assistance for expenses, printing, etc.
